My 2 Cents: Parents Get Involved In Raising School Grades

Here's a sage piece of advice someone gave me years ago, and I pass along to younger employees frequently: If you have a problem you want to take to your boss, take a solution for the problem with you.

And so I would say to parents who are seeing that their child's school got a C, or a D, or maybe an F on the school report cards released Thursday, don't go up to the school whining about why they don't measure up, unless you intend to offer some solutions and some help.

Dad's, I'm especially talking to you, because quite frankly the Mom's out there are way more plugged into the schools than we are.

I don't care if you're not a scholar or struggled in school yourself, so did I. Can you mow the lawn? Can you weed flower beds? Can you repair something in your child's classroom? Can you simply sit in the cafeteria and eat lunch with your child and the other children?

If you want your child to do better in school, if you want to understand why the school is struggling, go to the school and volunteer and see for yourself.

I know firsthand that when a dad walks into a school, especially an elementary school, the kids notice.

Dads, want to turn around your child's struggling school? Start a Dad's organization there, and don't wait for someone else to do it.
