Lunt, Chelf To Split Reps In Practice

Posted: Updated:
STILLWATER, Oklahoma -

After the shocking news on Sunday that Oklahoma State quarterback J.W. Walsh will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury, many assumed Wes Lunt would resume his starting role as he has steadily recovered from his own injuries.

It appears that isn't as clear cut as originally thought.

During his Monday press conference, OSU coach Mike Gundy said Lunt and third-stringer Clint Chelf will split first-team reps in practice this week in preparation for Saturday's showdown with TCU in Stillwater.

Lunt went down with a knee injury, and apparently an ankle injury, in the first series of the Cowboys' Sept. 15 victory against Louisiana-Lafayette. He has been recovering ever since as Walsh has guided the Cowboys to a 3-1 record in his absence.

Lunt was the starter the first three games of the season but played sparingly in OSU's 84-0 drubbing of Savannah State in the season opener and just the opening drive against Louisiana. He has 588 yards passing and four touchdowns against three interceptions with a 68 percent completion rate.

The only full game for Lunt was 37-of-60, 436-yard performance against Arizona in which he threw four touchdowns and all three of his interceptions as the Pokes failed to rally against the Wildcats.

In very limited time this season, Chelf has completed 4-of-8 passes for 51 yards with one touchdown and a pick. In 2011, Chelf completed 20-of-30 passes for 307 yards and three TDs with no interceptions.

Regardless of who plays for the Cowboys on Saturday, offensive coordinator Todd Monken expressed confidence in either's ability to lead the team.

"I'm confident we can win with either," Monken said. "We've got a good enough system and good enough players."
