OKLAHOMA CITY -
Police have apprehended the driver who led
officers on a short chase that ended with a crash in southwest Oklahoma City,
Wednesday evening.
Police say this all started when officers
recognized a vehicle that had been stolen earlier in the day, and tried to pull
the driver over.
Neighbors who live along 24th street
say the driver of a red SUV came speeding through their neighborhood where
children were playing.
Seven-year-old Shawn Wild was riding his bike
down 24th Street and barely got out of the way before the chase came
through.
"He missed my baby by this much," said his
mother Helen Matthews.
Matthews and her neighbors say the driver of the
SUV was going way to fast, hit at least one car and was swerving into lawns.
"This nutcase, whatever he is, was coming down
the street really fast, fast, so I screamed ‘Hey!'," said Matthews.
Just after the
driver went through the intersection of Southwest 24th and Western he lost
control and rolled his vehicle.
That's when
witnesses say the suspect got out of the car and was met with police
officers pointing their guns at him.
"The police had
their gun on him for like two minutes and when he thought about it, he shut the
door and took off," said a witness who asked not to be identified.
Police say the driver, as a Hispanic male with a
slender build wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, briefly fled the scene in the
area near SW 22nd and McKinley Ave. He was caught about 10
blocks away.
Three other
occupants inside the vehicle were taken to the hospital.
