A 77-year-old McAlester man was arrested after a police officer spotted a wounded dog in a ditch on September 15.

The officer stated in a court affidavit that the dog was severely wounded and appeared to have been dragged behind a vehicle.

That affidavit said Elbert Allford admitted to the officer he was the dog's owner and stated "the dog got loose and he could not get it in the bed of his truck so he tied it up to the hitch and was dragging it home."

After scuffling with police, Allford was arrested and booked into the Pittsburg County jail on a complaint of cruelty to animals.

He was charged on September 17.

The dog was taken to a McAlester animal hospital and police say it is expected to survive.

The court has ordered a competency evaluation for Allford.

His next hearing in Pittsburg County District Court is set for October 19.
