Church, City Leaders In Grove Clash Over Yard Signs

Posted: Updated:
GROVE, Oklahoma -

Churches and city leaders in Grove are at odds over signs designed to pack the pews.

The city pulled up signs the read "Rediscover Jesus" from both public and private land.

About 20 area churches were using the signs to promote a national "Go Back to Church Day," but there's an ordinance on the books in Grove, restricting religious signs in town.

Church leaders say, in years past, there hasn't been a problem.

But one city councilor, who is also a pastor, said the signs in question were more generic.

"When you start putting out a particular name and a particular religion, in this case Christianity, that's when the issue arose," said City Councilor Marty Dyer.

The churches plan to meet with city leaders to talk about changing the ordinance sometime in the next month.
