OKLAHOMA CITY -

Police say a woman carrying a child ran from a west Oklahoma City Wal-Mart and punched a police officer in the chest after stealing several items.

Employees at the store located at 6100 W. Reno called police on September 15 after security officers spotted a couple shoplifting merchandise. Loss prevention officers said the couple placed clothing in a bag the female suspect had picked up at the store. Security then watched as the man picked up a backpack, took off the tag and placed all the items inside.

Security said the male suspect, 28-year-old Julian Woosypitti, then tried to walk out of the store with the backpack without paying. He was detained without incident.

Security said the second suspect, 25-year-old Correna Haury, continued shopping and stole a few more items before trying to leave the store. When loss prevention officers attempted to stop her, they said she punched three employees before running out of the store while still carrying her child.

An officer drove down the street and found Haury about two blocks away near N.W. 4th Terrace and MacArthur. She was still holding the child. The officer took her into custody and drove her back to the store.

Police said once back at the store, Haury began cursing at the employees and claiming she didn't steal any merchandise because she hadn't left the store yet. An officer said Haury began to move toward a store employee so he grabbed her arm to hold her back. He said that's when Haury punched him in the center of his chest.

The officer then took the child Haury was holding, gave the baby to a store employee, and attempted to handcuff Haury. He said she kept twisting and turning, trying to get away, but he finally managed to force her to her knees and handcuff her.

Haury was booked into Oklahoma County jail on complaints of larceny, assault and battery, and resisting arrest.

Woosypitti was booked on a single complaint of larceny.
