Prosecutors Charge OKC Man With Raping 12-Year-Old Girl

The Oklahoma county District Attorney's Office has formally charged 25-year-old Victor Varela with raping a 12-year-old girl.

Oklahoma City police officers arrested Varela on July 29 after the girl's mother found suspicious texts from Varela on the girl's cell phone. Police say the messages were intimate and sexual in nature.

The girl first denied having sexual contact with Varela, but later told police Varela had sex with her at the end of May while she was visiting her aunt's house. Varela lived at the home with the victim's aunt and the aunt's fiancée.

During a police interview, Varela claimed the girl initiated sexual contact with him until he "pushed her off" his body. He said the sex was consensual.

Varela is charged with first-degree rape.
