OKLAHOMA CITY -- According to the Oklahoma Blood Institute somebody needs blood every two seconds.

And when seconds count, knowing those blood levels are there is vital.

Jeremy Hurley knows that all too well.

"I've done it for years (donate blood)," he said. "I never dreamed I would be on the other end of it."

He found himself on the other end of it when his 16-month-old daughter Madeline was born with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, a birth defect that left her with no diaphragm on her left side. Doctors were able to repair it.

"After her repair surgery, she ended up going on a heart and lung bypass," Hurley said. "That's where she got most of the blood that she received is when she was on those machines."

Thanks to those who donate, the blood Madeline needed was there for her.

"There's no words I could say, thank you is not enough," he said. "She means the world. I couldn't imagine my life without her."

Madeline did have one set back around her first birthday when her patch failed. So, she underwent another surgery and her family said she's doing just fine now.
