Rain and howling winds couldn't stop hundreds of animal lovers who stood in line to get their hands on a new best friend at the Central Oklahoma Humane Society Saturday.

It was all part of Free Adoption day.

The line wrapped around the building, and nobody seemed to mind the weather. The first woman in line actually got to the Humane Society's adoption center at 5:30 in the morning.

The doors didn't open until 11 a.m.

Organizers at the Central Oklahoma Humane Society say this was the biggest turn-out they've ever seen. They adopted out 152 animals.

"Oklahoma City is over-populated," said Amy Schrodes of the Central Oklahoma Humane Society.

"I mean there are so many animals that don't have homes already in our community so we want to make pet adoption fun. We have really, really amazing dogs every single day of the week, but sometimes it takes an event like this where you see them all together."

The biggest way organizers say you can help reduce the homeless animal population is to make sure they get spayed and neutered.
