Just when you think nobody in Washington has any sense, somebody comes along to confirm it.
The USDA, the Department of Agriculture, was established to support our food growers; farmers and ranchers, and apparently vegetarians too?
A newsletter sent out Monday within the USDA touted a campaign called "Meatless Mondays". This is some deal being pushed by an outside group to encourage Americans to go meatless, vegetarian, one day a week.
And the USDA memo supporting Meatless Monday's went so far as to point out that raising animals for food wastes water, fuel, and increases global warming.
After reading that, the Cattlemen's Association must have felt like running the bulls through the halls of USDA. To avoid the stampede the Department withdrew its support. But I was thinking, maybe the USDA could come up with a clever ad campaign like the Got Milk? ads.
"Eat American beef, just not too much of it because you're destroying the planet."
It's not very catchy yet, I'm still working on it. Bottom line, Meatless Mondays. Forgive me if I don't take part. Now, Meatlovers' Mondays, I'll bring the BBQ sauce!
