Police say a toddler shot herself in the leg after she found a loaded handgun in her parents' bedroom Tuesday night.

It happened just after 10 p.m. at a home in the 8900 block of East Marshall Street.

Police Captain Karen Tipler said the parents were in another room and the child was alone in the parents' bedroom.

The girl was transported to a Tulsa hospital with a wound to the upper leg. Police said the injury did not appear to be life-threatening.

Police said child crisis detectives would be talking with the parents, but that no charges were going to be filed, as of yet.

Captain Tipler said more investigation would have to be done to determine how the child got the gun.  She said police were getting conflicting stories about where exactly the gun was at the time.

Tipler stressed the importance of parents storing guns safely out of reach of children and teenagers.

"The parents have definitely learned a lesson about loaded firearms in the house," Tipler said.
