Burn Bans Scuttle Fireworks In 2 Oklahoma Counties

After the threat of wildfires put a damper on many Independence Day celebrations last year, only two of Oklahoma's 77 counties are banning outdoor burning and the use of fireworks as this year's Fourth of July holiday approaches.

County commissioners in Beaver and LeFlore counties have issued burn bans.

Beaver County emergency management director Keith Shadden says no one wanted to enact a burn ban so close to July 4, but officials were receiving several fire calls a day, and at least one of the fires was started with fireworks.

In LeFlore County, the fireworks display at the end of Celebrate America in Poteau Family Style is canceled.

Poteau Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Karen Wages says everyone is disappointed, but it's more important to protect people and homes.
