MANTEO, North Carolina -

Andy Griffith, the actor who created two iconic roles on American television, died Tuesday in his North Carolina home. He was 86 years old.

Griffith rose to fame in the 1960s playing Andy Taylor, a patient, widowed dad and town sheriff on the "Andy Griffith Show." It became one of the most popular shows in television history, immediately identifiable by that whistled tuned in the show's opening credits. Ron Howard, now an Academy Award-winning director, played Griffith's son, Opie.

Griffith later returned to television in the 1980s as the crime-solving lawyer in the  popular show, "Matlock."

Although Griffith is best known for his TV roles, he also starred in several movies. He also loved music and recorded more than a dozen albums, even winning a Grammy for a gospel music album.
