College Football Playoff Is Exactly What Fans Want

Posted: Updated:

College football has been played for 143 years, and as of Tuesday, the sport has its first playoff to determine a national champion.

The Presidents Oversight Committee approved the recommendation the conference commissioners made last week, making college football fans' dreams a reality.

No one is saying this four-team playoff is a perfect system. No system is going to be viewed as perfect (if by perfect you mean zero opposition). People will always take issue with a particular system for one reason or another.

However, this is what college football needed. This system, while small and in need of future expansion, will allow the champion to be determined on the field, which is where it should be settled.

No longer will college football fans have to question the ranking system of inarticulate computers, whose formulas no one knows (literally). Instead, the four teams will be determined by a selection committee that can be forthright and transparent of the criteria used to pick the top four teams each year.

There's no way to completely avoid controversy or completely avoid disagreements. Even with 68 teams now, the NCAA basketball tournament does not satisfy every team. There are those that are left out each year that feel they have a right to be in the tournament.

The point is, college football needs this, because it's what the fans want, and it's what is best for the competitive nature of the sport.

College football fans are willing to look past the imperfections of a system in order to enjoy the product on the field. They'll look past the fact that the corrupt and pointless bowl system will live on and, in the case of the six bowls that will host the semifinal games, thrive.

Fans are willing to look past the fact the commissioners and presidents potentially took millions away from college towns across the country by having the semifinals in bowls instead of on campuses.

But in the end, they're willing to overlook those things in order to get what they so desperately want:

A way to settle the debate of what college football team is the best on the field. A playoff.
