OKC Needs Help Choosing 'Tobacco Free' Park Signs

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY -

Oklahoma City wants the public to help pick a design for the new "tobacco free" signs that will soon be installed in city parks.

In May, the city council passed a resolution encouraging park visitors to abide by a voluntary policy to keep all lighted and unlighted tobacco products out of parks. Those products include cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco and snuff.

The city has narrowed the designs down to four signs, and will choose the winning design with the help of the public.

"Public input is an important part of gaining support for this initiative," said Wendel Whisenhunt, Parks and Recreation director. "We hope that by helping select which signs are installed in our parks, citizens will be more willing to comply with the policy and help keep our parks free of tobacco products."

All four signs can be viewed on the city's website. Once people choose their favorite, they can vote several different ways:

-Email the selection to public.info@okc.gov

-Cast a vote via Twitter to the Oklahoma City Parks Department (@okcparks)

-Cast a vote on Facebook at www.facebook.com/okcparks

It's not known when the city will announce its final selection.
