OSU's Heaney Named NCBWA First Team All-American

Oklahoma State's Andrew Heaney was named a First-Team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association.

Oklahoma State's Andrew Heaney added yet another post season accolade to his list of honors this season as Wednesday he was named a 2012 First-Team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association.

At the end of May, Heaney was named the Louisville Slugger First-Team All-American and that award along with his newest accolade make him the first Cowboy awarded First-Team All-American status from the two outlets since 1996 when Jeff Guiel earned the same distinction.

Earlier this month, Heaney was selected as the ninth overall pick by Miami in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

In his 15 starts for Oklahoma State during the 2012 season, Heaney was 8-2 with a 1.60 ERA. He dished six completed games with three shutouts and 140 strikeouts in 118.1 innings on the mound.

Heaney's strong season earned him the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year distinction and he was named to the All-Big 12 First Team. In addition, he was a finalist for the College Baseball Hall of Fame National Pitcher of the Year and was a semifinalist for both the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy.

Heaney is the fifth overall Oklahoma State player named an NCBWA First-Team All-American and the first since Peter Prodanov in 1995. Overall he is the 25th OSU player to earn All-American status from the NCBWA, which has been naming All-America teams since 1991.

An Oklahoma City native, Heaney recorded eight or more strikeouts in 12 of his 15 appearances and became the first OSU pitcher to reach 100 strikeouts in a season since Matt Smith racked up 114 in 2000. Heaney's 140 strikeouts were the fifth most in a single season in OSU history.

Among Big 12 pitchers in 2012, Heaney led the league in ERA, innings pitched, strikeouts, shutouts, complete games and opponent batting average.
