Tuesday's hail storm is leading to boarded up windows and tree limbs on curbs throughout the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. The storm pelted the metro as it damaged homes and totaled vehicles. Now, residents are cleaning up the mess.

Throughout Oklahoma City, the damage is still evident. Dozens of homes in certain neighborhoods have broken windows. People are now dealing with insurance companies and trying to get back to normal.

"It was wrapping like a tornado, and the hail was going though [my windows], Oklahoma City resident Jan Harrigan said.

Harrigan lives on the city's hard-hit northwest side. Once the glass on her windows gave way, hail started shooting straight through her home.

"[My] two dogs, my mom and I were in the closet," Harrigan said. "Hail was hitting the closet door. The dogs were scared to death."

Three days after the storm, Harrigan is still cleaning up by getting the windows replace, carpet cleaned and having her roof inspected. She has been keeping late hours working to get the property back to normal. Harrigan's telephone is still out, but the power is on.

Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John Doak says there are already more than 10,000 insurance claims, and he expects that number to climb to roughly 20,000 claims in a few weeks.

"It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when Oklahoma is going to have bad weather," Doak said.

You don't have to tell Harrigan that. She knows Oklahoma weather far too well. Since 2002, she has been forced to replace her roof four times.

Harrigan says her insurance company will be picking up the bill, but not all policies are the same. If you have questions on your policy, you are urged to contact the Oklahoma Insurance Department at 800-522-0071.

If you do need roof repairs, be wary of companies that solicit door-to-door. Get all guarantees, warranties and promises in writing. Make sure you check the company with the Better Business Bureau.
