NORMAN, Oklahoma -

Family and friends will remember an Oklahoma probation officer killed in the line of duty on Wednesday.

Jeffery Matthew McCoy, 32, of Norman, was killed on Friday, May 18, in Midwest City, while on the job.

McCoy, a probation and parole officer with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections since 2005, was fatally shot during a routine visit to an offender in Midwest City.

McCoy leaves behind a wife and two young children. A fund to help McCoy's family has been set up at Banc First, located at 1201 W. Main Street in Norman under the "The Jeffery McCoy Memorial/Children's Scholarship Fund." According to the Department of Corrections, several bogus sites claiming to be memorial funds are listed on the internet. The family warns those wanting to help, to be aware that the listed fund at Banc First is the only fund set up for the family.

The family of Jeffery McCoy released this statement to News9.com:

The family is hopeful and praying that the judicial system will proceed in a fair way to bring this to a quick resolution. This is a very difficult time for Officer McCoy's family, as well as his friends and his colleagues at the Department of Corrections. With the help of extended family, friends, and church family, Officer McCoy's family will face the days ahead with a positive attitude. Believing that God is comforting them in their pain, the family greatly appreciates the outpouring of care and concern, and is especially thankful for your thoughts and prayers.

Officer McCoy's funeral is planned for Wednesday, May 23 at 2 p.m. at CrossPointe Church, 2601 24th Avenue Southeast in Norman. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Primrose Funeral Service, also in Norman.
