Oklahomans To Miss Last Solar Eclipse In US Until 2017

If you want to see the last total solar eclipse in the United States until 2017, you will need to head to west Texas or north central New Mexico on Sunday, May 20, 2012.

The next total solar eclipse visible in the US will be on August 21, 2017. After that, the next one for US observers will be on April 8, 2024.

Solar eclipses occur when the Earth, sun and moon line up in such a way that the moon casts a shadow over Earth.

For places such as Medford, Oregon; Chico, California; Reno, Nevada; St. George, Utah; Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Lubbock, Texas the afternoon sun will become a luminous ring on Sunday.

In Oklahoma, sky watchers will see a crescent-shaped sun as the moon passes by off-center.
