It's been a long time coming for the former Cowboy, but the wait was well worth it.

Rickie Fowler, dressed in his bright orange from head to toe, held off Rory McIlroy and D.A. Points in a playoff to take the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.

The win was Fowler's first PGA Tour victory, and his legions of fans had been waiting quite some time for it.

Fowler quickly shot up to being one of the premier fan favorites in the game after turning pro out of Oklahoma State in 2009. His youthful energy, interesting outfits and hoards of sponsorships made his one of the biggest names in golf, but something was still missing.

Many believed that a golfer without an actual tour victory didn't deserve all the hype and attention, but Sunday's final round took care of that issue.

Fowler finished at 14-under on the weekend, along with Points and McIlroy. The trio entered into a sudden death playoff on the par-4 18th hole.

Fowler came out aggressive, putting his approach within three feet of the hole and putting it home for a birdie, while Points and McIlroy both picked up pars.

He brought home a share of the purse worth $1.17 million for his victory and 500 points in the FedEx Cup points standings.

Fowler started off the championship strong with a 66 on Thursday, followed by a rough day in the second round with a 72.

But he finished out the weekend with a 67 and a 69 to bring it home.

The next Tour event will be THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass May 10-13.
