Two Oklahoma City police officers are being honored for putting their lives on the line to save a fellow officer.

It was back in December that Officer Chris Grimes and Sgt. Roy Mitchell got a call about a disturbance at Valleybrook's town hall.

Someone had broken into the building, trashed the place, and then written on the outside walls in blood. And when they arrived they found the suspect, 36-year-old Damian Muncie fighting with a Valleybrook officer in the parking lot.

What Grimes did not realize was how intent the suspect was on hurting anyone who tried to stop him. About that time, Mitchell arrived on the scene and did what he could to control the situation, even deploying his taser gun. But it had no effect.

Within a matter of minutes, Muncie grabbed the officer's gun and started shooting, hitting both Grimes (Foot) and Mitchell (Leg). In all Muncie fired more than a dozen shots at point blank range.

And for their heroic action, both Grimes and Mitchell are receiving the department's highest honor, the Medal of Honor, at Friday night's police banquet.

The Valleybrook officer involved, Darren Johnson, was also shot in the leg during the shootout. He received the Medal of Honor from the Valleybrook Police Department.

Muncie died at the scene after officers returned fire. He had just been released from prison two weeks before.
