DEL CITY, Okla. - A Del City church has many of its neighbors angry about what the church is considering trying to do with the property.

The Pastor of Howard Memorial Baptist Church confirms that a California-based residential rehab center wants to create a residential facility in the church.  He says the in-patient facility would treat 30 to 50 people who have been in prison, recovering drug addicts and alcoholics, and homeless veterans.

Carla Webster lives less than two blocks from the church.  She says it's a bad idea.

"Do we want that walking and coming and strolling through our neighborhoods, causing our property values to go down and our crime rate to go up?  I don't," said Webster.

Pastor Andrew Mericle says an in-patient rehab facility here benefits the community because he says these people are going to be released back into society anyway.  And while they are here, they would be closely watched.

The city says the Church has not formally begun the application process.
