We've enjoyed a streak of much-deserved quiet, comfortable weather. Now, Mother Nature is ready to put us through the paces once again. This round of severe weather will be much unlike the weekend episode, however. Instead of a slow-moving, multi-day event, this will be a rather progressive pattern with a quick-moving cold front. Therefore, the window of severe weather will be primarily limited to the late afternoon and evening hours.

The ingredient we're missing for the day is the moisture. Behind the weekend storm system, drier air moved in and we haven't had a good fetch of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico since. Even with an increase of moisture into the afternoon hours, it will still be below what is typical of April. The lack of moisture will help to limit the tornado threat, but hail and damaging winds may still accompany these storms this evening. The outlook map from the Storm Prediction Center is shown above. Most of eastern Oklahoma is under this area. The highest risk of severe weather will be west of Highway 75 where the impacts of the storms will be seen first. Some gradual weakening may occur as the night wears on.

Beyond the storms, some post-frontal rain showers may occur. That combined with cloud cover and a cooler air mass moving in will mean a rather chilly day on our hands, Friday. Temperatures will struggle to reach the 60s in some locations, especially if the sunshine doesn't break through the clouds late in the day.

The good news is this: we'll get the rain and, more importantly, the severe weather threat out of the area for the weekend! Outside of some chilly mornings, the days will be gorgeous and mild. In fact, the nice, quiet and gradually warming conditions will be with us well into next week. There are no complaints from our end when we can find a calm streak of weather during our most active severe weather time of year! One other piece of good news, 75% of Oklahoma is drought-free! For the first time since early on last year, ALL of Green Country is free from the drought.
