Firefighters were forced early Thursday morning to let a suspicious fire burn an old, vacant farmhouse to the ground.

The fire started around 3 a.m. in the 6700 block of S.W. 134th Street, just west of Interstate 44 and S.W. 134th Street. By the time firefighters arrived, flames had engulfed the house. Crews were forced to go into defensive mode and let it burn.

The house was built in 1908. The homeowners said they'd rented it out for several years, but it was currently vacant. They had planned to renovate it and rent it out again, or perhaps live in it themselves.

The homeowners said in recent years, they'd had a lot of trouble with vandals at the old farmhouse. Firefighters said they're not sure yet what started the fire, but it does appear to be arson.
