"The Pioneer Woman" made her way down Interstate 35 Tuesday to read her new book, "Charlie the Ranch Dog," at the Oklahoma City Zoo.

Ree Drummond, the Pioneer Woman, based Charlie off her own dog, a Basset Hound she says is a little grumpy and who thinks he's much more useful on the ranch than he really is.

Drummond is helping with the Read Across America campaign, which encourages families to read every day of the year.

Drummond says she thinks everyone will enjoy Charlie's lazy adventures.

"You don't have to dumb books down for kids. I realized you can write with humor and irony," Drummond said.

Drummond says she's written another adventure for Charlie and expects it to be in stores around Christmas.

Right now, Drummond is working on her blog and cooking show.
