Oklahoma City police arrested a man Tuesday after he called and said he had information on a possible homicide.

Officers met 18-year-old Edward Williams in the 1600 block of S.W. 39th Street around 1 p.m. Tuesday. He told them someone had been beaten and stabbed at an apartment in southwest Oklahoma City. Officers asked Williams to take them to the location.

When they arrived in the 5900 block of S. Lee, they found 78-year-old Vernon Gowdy critically injured, but still alive. An EMSA ambulance crew rushed Gowdy to OU Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

Police believe Williams attacked Gowdy, but they don't yet know why.

Police originally arrested Williams on a complaint of assault with a deadly weapon. Now that Gowdy has died, the booking charge will be upgraded to a complaint of first-degree murder.
