GUTHRIE, Oklahoma -

Authorities in Guthrie used tear gas to end a more than five hour standoff.

Guthrie police and deputies with the Logan County Sheriff's Office responded to the standoff around noon on Monday. Law enforcement officials say the man barricaded himself inside the home located south of Lake Guthrie on Central Street after a domestic dispute with a family member.

During the standoff, authorities had talked with the man by phone. He never gave any demands or a reason for not coming out but threatened to kill his family earlier. After they left the home he used a washing machine to barricade himself inside.

"We just heard five shots. It didn't sound like a gun but it was just a big boom so we figured it was tear gas," said Jamie Pena who lives two doors away.

Authorities finally used tear gas to disorient the man, then went inside the home and took him into custody without incident.

"The guns were in direct reach of him, so if we wouldn't have used the gas and tried to send the team in, it would've been bad. I have a feeling," said Lt. Mark Bruning of Guthrie Police.

Police say two guns were found near the man.

Homeowners in the area were relieved.

The man's name isn't being released at this time. He was taken away from the scene by ambulance for a mental evaluation and to be treated for inhaling the gas. No one was hurt.
