Prosecutors have charged a 23-year-old man with first-degree murder in the violent death of his aunt, Violet Hemphill.

Hemphill was found dead inside her Midwest City home at 1038 Holly Lane on Monday, February 13. According to Potts' girlfriend, he fought with Hemphill just before the murder.

According to the State Medical Examiner, Hemphill suffered multiple sharp-force injuries. Investigators said numerous bloody weapons were located around Hemphill's body. In police documents, investigators listed an axe, a bloody brick, bloody table legs, and a broken knife. Officers said Hemphill also had a bloody pillow on top of her face.

After Hemphill was killed, Potts and his girlfriend made a failed suicide attempt. Police said they tried to overdose on medication and blow the house up with natural gas. They were both found, nude, in a bedroom and rushed to the hospital.
