A security guard is credited with helping five children escape a fire at an apartment complex in northwest Oklahoma City.

The fire started around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at the North Village Apartments near Hefner and Western. The fire spread to three apartments. Five children were staying inside the apartment where the blaze started, and a security guard helped them escape.

The fire displaced three families, including 12 children. All escaped unharmed. The American Red Cross is helping them find a temporary place to stay.

The security guard who rescued the children was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. He's expected to be okay.

It's not known yet how the fire started. The fire marshal is investigating.
