Movie Diva Review: 'This Means War'

I really enjoy all the lead actors in this movie, but it's hard to work up anything more than lukewarm feelings for this mess of a bro-mantic action comedy.

I really enjoy all the lead actors in this movie, but it's hard to work up anything more than lukewarm feelings for this mess of a bro-mantic action comedy.

Chris Pine and Tom Hardy are CIA operatives and best friends. They love each other, they're not ashamed to say it, but they're still manly enough to shoot bad guys while looking James Bond-handsome. Pine is a playboy with a woman in every secret operation location, and Hardy is a divorced dad who really wants to settle down with the right gal.

Enter Reese Witherspoon. She's a product tester who uprooted her life and moved to California for her boyfriend, who she later found in bed with his Pilates instructor. He's now engaged and she's feeling lonely and pitiful.

Witherspoon is pushed back into the dating scene by her best friend, played by late-night talk show host and comedian, Chelsea Handler. She's a married mom but seems to love reliving her single days through Witherspoon.

Through those quirky moments that always happen in romantic comedies, Witherspoon ends up dating both Pine and Hardy. She has no idea they're friends; and when the guys realize they're dating the same woman, they decide to let her pick the best man.

It's pretty obvious who Witherspoon is going to end up with, but it's a two-hour movie so we've got to go through the motions, right? And it's no hardship watching Pine and Hardy. They're extremely good looking and fairly amusing. And it's fun watching them use CIA resources to trip each other up while battling over Witherspoon.

Witherspoon is… okay. Remember how vivacious, charming and funny she was in "Legally Blonde?" You don't get any of that here. She's not that likeable, but she's very watchable. I dare any woman who goes to see this flick not to ooh and ahh over her outfits. The shoes alone… beautiful!

All in all, this movie is just…ehhh. If the movie you really want to go see this weekend is sold out, and your second choice is also sold out, go see "This Means War."

I give this movie 2.5 out of 5 stars. It's rated PG-13.
