The first significant winter storm of the season for Oklahoma and Arkansas is expected to move into the two states starting during the weekend.

Officials with the National Weather Service in Tulsa said Saturday that the storm is expected to make driving conditions dangerous with 2 to 4 inches of snow across northern Oklahoma and northwestern Arkansas.

According to officials, the heaviest amounts are likely in the higher elevations of the Ozark Mountain region of northeastern Oklahoma and northwestern Arkansas.

Accumulations of about one-tenth to one-half inch of sleet and freezing rain are expected in southeastern Oklahoma and into Arkansas.

"The event for Oklahoma City should kick off around 9 p.m. Sunday with light snow," said Nick Bender, News 9 Meteorologist. "Eventually, temperatures both at the surface and aloft will warm above levels supportive of snow, and a transition to sleet, freezing rain and finally rain will occur."

"This transition will take place roughly during our morning newscast Monday, which coincides with the morning commute. While the phase of freezing rain should be short-lived, minor ice accumulations are possible. Given the mild, lackluster winter we have had, any ice accumulation, regardless of how small, will more than likely result in hazardous traveling conditions Monday morning," Bender said.

Bender said the total snowfall accumulations for Oklahoma City metro ranges from 1 to 2 inches, and 2 to 3 inches across northern Oklahoma. Minor sleet or ice accumulations are expected, but any ice will prove troublesome.

"Keeping a close eye on southern Oklahoma where precipitation should be heavier, and temperatures are marginal for snow, sleet, or ice. A changeover here could result in higher snow, sleet, ice totals," Bender said.

The weather service says the storm system is to begin moving out of the region by Monday night and clearing skies are forecast for the area on Tuesday.
