Bears At Oklahoma City Zoo Disagree With Groundhog

OKLAHOMA CITY -

It seems groundhogs are not the only critters capable of predicting the weather, just ask the Oklahoma City Zoo.

The zoo has a proud history of providing animal soothsayers to rival the famous Punxsutawney Phil, and most of them haven't been groundhogs.  A potbellied pig forecasted for years before grizzly brothers Will and Wiley took over not long ago.

A curious crowd gathered at the zoo's Oklahoma Trails exhibit today to see Will and Wiley's take on what the next few weeks will bring.

Tara Henson, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the zoo, presented the proclamation.

"If no shadows are detected, spring will arrive post-haste," Hanson read from the official-looking document.

But when the grizzly brothers emerged from their den, the only thing that they saw was their lunch.  It's not clear whether or not they even looked for shadows.

"They worked it out because they wanted it to be spring, not snowy," said one of the youngest spectators.  "Now they're layin' on their bellies."

A vote was taken and zoo personnel made the official decision--no shadows seen.

"Whereas the bears did not see their shadows, it is hereby proclaimed that from this day forth, spring is on its way," Hanson read to the group of cheering spectators.
