$1M Price Tag Helps Peterson Decide To Keep No. 28

Athletes and sports fans know how important a certain jersey number can be. Some have a favorite number from pee-wee days, while others are assigned a number that they grow to like, still others say they don't care much about the number, just about being on the field.

Minnesota Viking, and former Oklahoma Sooner, Adrian Peterson found out that the importance placed on a jersey number also comes with a high price tag.

The star running back was considering a change in his number from No. 28 t0 No. 23, but Wednesday Peterson said in a series of posts on his personal Twitter page that he would not make the change because he would have to pay $1 million to cover the unsold jerseys already produced with his current number.

"I have to pay a Million Bucks! Somebody's winning in that situation & Its not me!" said Peterson via Twitter. "So clearly with that said I won't be changing my number."

Peterson said that No. 28 "has been good" to him but that he was ready for something new. He said that in high school he wanted No. 29 to honor Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson, but his team didn't have it so he chose No. 28.

"The total amount that I would have to pay blew my mind!!!!!" added Peterson.

The Associated Press reports that the NFL policy states that players interested in changing numbers must apply by March of the year they want to switch and they have to buy the unused inventory.

Furthermore the AP says the league is making a move from Reebok to Nike, which creates the potential for players to change without charge, but that league spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league hasn't finalized the number-switch policy for 2012.

Peterson received some heat from fans after he commented "why in the hell do I have to pay a million dollars to change my number! I don't even get paid a million."

He replied saying that the decision was easy, saying he is not going to "waste that type of money just to change a number on my (his) work uniform!"

"That's a easy one... hell 28 it is!!! Lol" added Peterson who is currently rehabbing his left knee after undergoing reconstructive surgery in December to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)

So for now, don't get rid of those purple No. 28 jerseys --yet.
