My 2 Cents: Video Game Tax Doesn't Make Sense

Few things grate on my nerves more than seeing a bunch of kids in a darkened room playing video games for hours on end.

Few things grate on my nerves more than seeing a bunch of kids in a darkened room playing video games for hours on end.

Call me old and cranky, but our children were not meant to be pasty faced basement dwellers. They need to be active outside or inside.

And usually I support any push in that direction, but I don't really even understand what a legislator from Stilwell is trying to accomplish with a measure he's proposing.

He's proposing a one percent tax on violent video games. He says it's to fight childhood obesity and school bullying.

The obesity part would apply to all video games. The bullying part, well, it's going to be awfully hard to prove violent video games are responsible for that. Even if you could, how would adding 50 cents to the cost of a $50 dollar video game keep kids safe from bullying?

Seems like a sneaky way to try to raise more tax revenue.

And again, a one percent tax isn't going to keep any child from buying a game he wants and sitting on the couch all day exercising his thumbs.
