LOGAN COUNTY, Oklahoma -

A call that started in Edmond to check on a wreckless driver ended when a suspect slammed into a tree in Payne County.

Around 2 p.m., a driver hit another vehicle on northbound Interstate 35 in Edmond. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol pursued the driver. Deputies from Logan and Payne counties eventually joined the chase.

The suspect left I-35 and began traveling on Highway 51. He soon turned onto a dirt road and continued driving at a high rate of speed.

The suspect started driving through farmland. A trooper fired a shot at the man's truck, but he kept driving.

The suspect ended up on a dirt road, but deputies said the man was driving so fast he lost control when he tried to make a turn. He slammed into a utility pole, knocking it down. He then drove across some farmland and crashed into tree, ending the chase.

The suspect was injured in the crash. An ambulance crew loaded the man onto a gurney and took him to a nearby hospital. His condition is not known.

A Logan County deputy told News 9 the suspect was "very" intoxicated.
