A thief breaks into a metro school and steals money right out of the vault.

It happened at a Putnam City Middle School Monday when kids were gone for the holiday.

Police said the thief was strategic and educated.  He knew how to avoid staff, motion sensors and, most importantly, he had intimate knowledge of Cooper Middle School.

"He wears a mask the entire time.  We have kind of run into a road block in trying to find him," said Chief Mark Stout of Putnam City Schools.

Investigators estimate the man who stole from Cooper Middle School is between 18-25 years old.

The thief went throughout the building and even climbed into ceiling panels and eventually made his way to the school vault.

"He dropped down in front of the vault and proceeded to work on the door for about 40 minutes," Stout said.

He got away with an estimated $1,000. Police said he bypassed expensive equipment like computers, printers and radio supplies just to get cash.

Because the man knew the school so well police believe this could have been an inside job.  They are investigating current and former students and employees.

If you have any information that can help investigators call Putnam City School police at 405-787-3621.
