A former Muskogee County jailer was indicted by a federal grand jury on Wednesday for assaulting inmates.

Jerrod Lane, 26, faces six charges related to two separate assaults of an inmate housed at the Muskogee County Jail in October 2011.

Prosecutors say he pepper sprayed a inmate who was fully restrained and then lied about it on an incident report.

They say Lane later propped open the same victim's jail cell and invited Phillip Oliver, another inmate, to attack him.

The indictment further alleges that Lane told Oliver to "go in there and do what you gotta do," promising to cover for Oliver if he later got into trouble for assaulting the victim

If convicted, the Jerrod Lane could go to federal prison for upwards of 45 years.

Phillip Oliver pleaded guilty last week to one count of conspiracy for his role in the incident.
