OKLAHOMA CITY -

Red Cross volunteers used the holiday to talk to members of the community about how to prevent house fires and how to escape if one happens.

Volunteers went door-to-door in the area around Northeast 23rd Street and Martin Luther King Avenue in Oklahoma City this Monday. They talked to residents who were home and left safety tip door hangers for those who weren't.

The hangers, printed in English and Spanish, give cooking and heating tips, and highlight the importance of smoke alarms, and the need to make a fire escape plan.

"This is one of the highest areas for fires. The Red Cross has responded to a lot of fires in this area. We just want to help and understand that fire alarms is one of the best things that you can have to keep your family safe," said Teron Gaddis, pastor of the Greater Bethel Baptist Church.

Since December 1, 2011, the Red Cross has responded to 69 house fires in central and western Oklahoma.
