Volunteers with the American Red Cross will be going door-to-door in Oklahoma City to provide residents with tips on how to prevent home fires, and how to escape safely during a fire.

This event will take place on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which is Monday, January 16.

According to the Red Cross, volunteers will talk to residents about fire safety, and will also leave safety-tip door hangers for people who are not at home. The door hangers provide cooking and heating tips, and also highlight the importance of smoke alarms, and the need to create and practice a fire escape plan.

"Most home fires occur in the dead of winter, so it's especially important this time of year for people to think about safety as they cook and as they heat their homes," said Rusty Surette, Director of Communications.

Officials said volunteers responded to 57 homes and apartment fires across central and western Oklahoma, and so far in 2012, they have responded to 12 home fires already.
