Dean's Blog: Mike Stoops Returning To OU

Bob Stoops is proud of the fact that he has never fired a coach, and in theory that won't change.

As we told you five weeks ago, Mike Stoops will rejoin the OU coaching staff, and we confirmed Sunday night that it will happen this week.

Stoops will return as secondary coach and co-defensive coordinator and ultimately be responsible for calling the defense.

One inside source told me that current co-defensive coordinator Brent Venables is 100 percent supportive of Mike's return; same for Bobby Jack Wright, the assistant defensive coordinator whom I expect to remain on the staff.

Current secondary coach Willie Martinez is the odd man out and has been contacting coaches for weeks, and I'm told will soon take another job.

The uncertainty about Martinez just cost OU a 4-star defensive back who recently de-committed, one more reason to expect this change sooner rather than later.
