STILLWATER, Oklahoma – Oklahoma State University and football coach Mike Gundy have agreed on an eight-year contract extension, signing Gundy through the 2019 season.

Financial details of the contract have not been released and the contract is still subject to approval by the OSU Board of Regents. The school's official announcement noted that Gundy's contract will be "funded by the Department Of Athletics," meaning that the contract money will not come from donors.

Athletic Director Mike Holder said Gundy has led OSU football to unprecedented success.

"More importantly, this success has been achieved by doing things the right way," Holder said. "Coach Gundy has created a family atmosphere in which he stresses the importance of playing by the rules, good sportsmanship, excelling in the classroom, and representing OSU in a manner that will make everyone associated with the university proud of the product on the field."

Contract negotiation talk had been a hot topic, even before and during the Fiesta Bowl.

Gundy's current contract paid him $2.1 million per year and would run through the 2015 season.

Gundy said multiple times that his agent, Jimmy Sexton, who was hired last year, handled most of the initial negotiations with the university.

Reports were that Sexton was asking in the range of $4 million per year for his client.

Gundy led the Cowboys to a 12-1 record, a Big 12 championship and a Fiesta Bowl victory over Stanford this season.

He is 23-3 in the past two years, and has matched or improved his win total each year he has been at Oklahoma State.

Gundy said he loves Oklahoma State University and wanted to thank President Burns Hargis, Holder, the program's donors and his assistant coaches and staff.

"I am humbled and appreciative for the new extension," Gundy said. "Oklahoma State means a lot to me and my family. My duty is to continue building on the success we have enjoyed the past few years and make sure our program compliments the academic mission of OSU."
