There's a get together in Washington this week that reeks of irony to me. Representatives from more than two dozen countries have been invited by the White House to sit down and discuss religious intolerance.

But it's the focus of the intolerance that perplexes me. The meeting apparently is primarily about improving relations with Muslim countries that are upset about Western characterizations of Islam, such characterizations as the European cartoons of the prophet Muhammed, and a small Florida church burning the Koran.

I certainly understand why those things are offensive to Muslims. I don't like it either, but that's the price of freedom of expression.

That is not being intolerant, and to all of you attending the conference let me be the first to say "welcome to the land of tolerance".

When you go back home, try a little experiment, try whipping out a Bible and reading it on a street corner just about anywhere in the Middle East and then you'll have a better understanding of religious intolerance.
