Oklahoma Traffic Fatalities Decrease In October

There is a decrease in traffic fatalities on Oklahoma roads in October, compared to the same month last year, according to a new report from the Department of Public Safety.

There is a decrease in traffic fatalities on Oklahoma roads in October, compared to the same month last year, according to a new report from the Department of Public Safety.

Officials said fatalities were down by seven in October, 2011 with a total of 53, compared to 60 in October, 2010.

According to the report, there were eight motorcyclist and four pedestrians who died in crashes during October, and five of the fatality crashes involved alcohol.

The department released the following facts in traffic fatalities this October:

• Forty-five fatality victims were Oklahoma residents and eight were non-residents.

• There were 36 male, 15 female victims with two genders unknown.

• Ten of the fatality victims were age 20 or under. The leading number of fatalities by age group was 12 in the 21-30 year-olds, and ten in the 31 to 40 year-olds.

• Tulsa County led the state in fatalities with a fatality count of six, followed by Oklahoma County with five fatalities.

• The highest number of fatality crashes were on State Highways with 12. There were 11 fatalities on County Roads and U.S. Highways.

• Forty-seven percent of those who died in traffic collisions were not wearing safety belts at the time of the crash, according to DPS statistics.

Officials said 634 people have died in crashes on Oklahoma roads this year.
