I didn't realize it, but I have missed the muppets gang.

I didn't realize it, but I have missed the muppets gang. Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie and their counterparts were a big part of my life when I was a child, providing hours of laughs and entertainment. Now they're back in the new movie "The Muppets," and this is one reunion I am happy to attend.

Actor Jason Segel of CBS' "How I Met Your Mother" co-wrote, produced and starred in the movie. He's loved the muppets since he was a child and that love shines through every frame of the film. Segel plays Gary. His brother is a muppet named Walter who's obsessed with Kermit and his pals, so he jumps at the chance to take a trip with Gary and his girlfriend Mary (played by Amy Adams) to Los Angeles to see The Muppet Studios.

Unfortunately, the spotlight has turned away from the muppets and the guys have gone their separate ways. Fozzie is part of a cover band in Reno, Animal is in mental facility receiving anger management treatment, and Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris. An evil oil baron has bought their old studio is planning to destroy it in order to get to the black gold buried beneath it.

Gary, Mary, Walter and Kermit hit the road to reunite the old gang for a telethon they hope will help them save the studio. The movie is at its best when it forgets about the humans and focuses on those loveable muppets. It seems every character you loved, kind of liked or barely remembered is in this movie. That's what makes this movie so wonderful. It was like taking a time machine back to my childhood, and the trip was so much fun.

Here's the thing: I don't think children will enjoy this movie nearly has much as their parents will. Sure, the film has silly, music-filled movements kids will like. But there's also a lot of nostalgia and nods to the past that only older viewers will appreciate. In fact, I think children may be bored by stretches of it.

Still, I say take the kids and start building their love for the muppets. The gang certainly deserves your affection. And even if the kids nod off in the middle of the movie, you'll be too occupied and entertained with the antics of your old muppet friends to notice.

I give "The Muppets" 3 out of 5 stars. It's rated PG.
