NORMAN, Oklahoma –Despite suffering a season ending surgery Saturday in OU's win over Kansas State, Oklahoma walk-on running back Dominique Whaley will receive a scholarship in December.

Bob Stoops confirmed the scholarship at his weekly press conference Monday.

"We had already come to the decision that at mid-year we were already planning on putting Dom on scholarship," said Stoops.

Saturday against Kansas State, Whaley suffered a broken ankle on the Sooners' first play from scrimmage that will end his season for the Sooners. Although that cast some doubt to his ability to acquire the scholarship, Coach Stoops put those doubts to bed after the game.

"The plans had already been made and I made sure when I walked in the locker room after putting my arm around Dom and letting him know how much I appreciate him—that I wanted him to know we've already made that decision and this (injury) isn't going to change it. He's already earned it in our eyes," said Stoops.

Whaley was one of the best stories in the nation this season, joining the Sooners after playing a year at Langston University. The junior from Lawton quickly impressed the coaches enough to earn a spot in the starting lineup.

Whaley missed Oklahoma's upset loss to Texas Tech with the flu, but was back in the starting lineup Saturday against Kansas State.
