Hazardous Materials Spill Shuts Down Parts Of I-44, OKC Street

OKLAHOMA CITY – A hazardous materials spill on Interstate 44 shut down the northbound lanes on I-44, and two lanes on Southwest 29th Street in Oklahoma City Saturday afternoon.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, currently, I-44 northbound traffic is being diverted to the Service Road at Southwest 29th Street. The eastbound and the westbound traffic on Southwest 29th Street are still blocked at this point.

The incident happened on the northbound lanes on I-44, just south of Southwest 29th Street. According to the Highway Patrol, a Baker Hughes truck lost a load of containers. The containers were then struck by another Baker Hughes truck following behind.

According to officials, the hazardous materials may be some type of algaecide. But they do not have an official identification of the chemical.

One OHP trooper drove himself to the hospital due to a respiratory complaint.

The southbound traffic on I-44 is not affected at this point.
