Coweta Civil War Reenactment To Help Homeless Veterans Saturday

COWETA, Oklahoma -- More than 150 years after the Civil War men and women still gather to remember the battles won and lost and the soldiers who gave their lives.

Some of the battles were fought not far from here, and reenactors are getting ready to relive history that will help our veterans' futures.

Under a setting sun out in the rolling hills of Wagoner County, soldiers prepare for battle. Two cannons sit at the top of the hill, ready to light up the Oklahoma sky.

In the valley below, three soldiers sit by the campfire preparing for the day ahead. Saturday afternoon, soldiers will take sides. Union and Confederate soldiers will draw the guns and fight.

But the battle won't be won in a field near Coweta. The real battle is the fight for homeless veterans. The Wagoner County Disable American Veterans hope money raised by reenacting the past will mean a brighter future for the men and woman serving today.

"Probably the most satisfying thing that I've ever been able to be involved with. It makes you feel good when you can help someone that's in need. I've been in that same position at some point in my life and being able to give back is amazing," said Tom Campbell, Disabled American Veterans.

The reenactment starts Saturday at 2 p.m. The cost is $3 for adults and $1 for children 12 and under. The reenactment will be held near 32721 E. 161st Street South.
