Movie Diva Review: 2 Movies I Did Not Expect To Enjoy

Sometimes movies you expect to hate turn out to be movies you actually enjoy.

OKLAHOMA CITY – You know those movies that are so bad they're actually kind of good?

That's how I feel about one of this week's movies: "The Three Musketeers."

The movie is, of course, inspired by the 1844 novel by Alexandre Dumas, but it has nothing in common with the classic. It's all about swordplay, explosions, and (what's supposed to be) witty banter and one-liners.

The movie most notably stars Orlando Bloom and Milla Jovovich as bad guys, and Matthew Macfadyen, Luke Evans and Ray Stevenson as the three musketeers.

Let's be honest. This movie is not good. The dialogue is lame and the acting is so cheesy I want to pour it on some macaroni. But, my friends, it's fun! Fencing and fighting and battles and blasts! And, it's pretty! The costumes are gorgeous and colorful and outrageous.

In case you haven't guessed by now, I'm no cinematic snob. A movie doesn't need to have intricate plot twists and deep, complex characters for me to enjoy it. Don't get me wrong. I adore movies with meaning. But sometimes you just want a little mindless fun. So, I have to say (with a little shameful shrug), I liked it.

I give "The Three Musketeers" 2.5 out of 5 stars. The movie is rated PG-13 and is in theaters Friday, October 21. The 15-year-old boy in your life will probably love it.

On to a movie I was dreading viewing; the "Footloose" remake. Really, Hollywood? Did we really need another "Footloose" when the first one was so fantastically awesome?

I must admit, however, I liked this movie. I don't think it's as good as the first one, but it's so much like the first one it's hard not to like. Almost everything is the same, just updated. You'll experience déjà vu when you hear some of the dialogue. The music from the first movie is back, just with a 2011 twist (although they left Deniece Williams' original ‘Let Hear It For The Boy' in the movie, thank goodness!). Even the clothes and hairstyles are strikingly similar.

Here's the one thing 2011 "Footloose" does better than 1984 "Footloose": The dancing. Those of us who are children of the 1980s now know that Kevin Bacon didn't do a lot of that fancy footwork (gasp and swoon!) in the movie. Apparently, that kind of stunt dancing doesn't fly with today's MTV crowd. Stars Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough (today's Ren MacCormack and Ariel Moore) did their own dancing and in that aspect they're wonderful.

Their acting, however, is just okay. But no one's expecting Oscar-worthy performances in the "Footloose" remake. If you liked the first "Footloose," you'll probably like this one. If you were born after the original movie came out then you'll probably like this movie, too.

Overall, I give "Footloose" 3 out of 5 stars. It's rated PG-13 and has some sexual themes and violence parents may not want their children to see.
