NORMAN, Oklahoma – Norman City Council member Roger Gallagher didn't think twice when he and two other council members drafted a resolution to add the motto "In God We Trust" to council chambers.

"The idea came from commissioners in the county. They passed a resolution. They gave me an idea and a couple other people were interested in it and decided to bring it forward for debate," Gallagher said.

The resolution passed unanimously at Tuesday night's meeting.

The decision didn't come without critics. The debate at the meeting centered around religion. Citizens at the podium argued the phrase is not inclusive of all religions.

Councilman Gallagher disagrees.

"It's for the entire country, every citizen of this country. That motto applies to every citizen of this country," he said.

Some Norman residents support the council's decision.

"I am definitely for that because if we don't trust in God, I would like to know who we are trusting in," Judy Crutcher said.

"I think it's great. We need to recognize God more. We are taking him out of everything and should be putting him in everything," said Gail Bunyea.
