EDMOND, Oklahoma -- Edmond residents will soon see some extra pennies added to their sales receipts.

Tuesday night, voters overwhelmingly approved a half cent sales tax increase to fund a new public safety center.

According to the result, 3,939 voters voted "yes" and 1,452 voted "no" on the proposition.

The new facility would house Edmond's police station, jail and 911 call center. Edmond Police Chief Bob A. Ricks says the current facilities are old, out of date and too small.

Ricks says the new center will help keep the city's crime rate low.

The new facility is expected to cost more than $25 million. The increased tax will be in effect for five years.
